Dr. Susan Barrio, an emergency physician at Surrey Memorial, is featured in the Vancouver Sun for her work in creating the new residency program for emergency medicine. The new program has been created for doctors who are already certified in family medicine but are interested in another year of training to become emergency medicine specialists. With the support of Facility Engagement funding and involving key stakeholders from FHA and UBC, she was able to create a business plan to lead the development of the plus-one residency program for emergency medicine at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
UBC and the Ministry of Health agreed to fund two residency positions and interviews for them will be taking place soon for the training that starts next summer. Dr. Craig Murray, head of the ER said the training program is starting off small but he expects it will grow because of the great need for more emergency physicians.
